How to Write Discussion Posts

Replying to Classmates

  • Read some of your classmates' posts. You can do so by selecting the title of the post you would like to read. Make sure to read all replies in a thread before responding to your classmate's original post.
  • Find an idea to jump off from. Do not feel pressured to reply to every part of your classmate's post. Did you identify a point you want to expand on? Awesome! Focus on that section when replying to your classmate.
  • Be respectful. This should go without saying. We can disagree with our classmates, but avoid rude language, informal structure, and attacks on personal character.

Types of Replies

  • Yes, and... You can agree with your classmates, and you also need to build upon your classmate's original post. Are there any areas you can expand on with further information or illustrate with original examples? Are there any areas that your classmate did not mention in their post that you can share to further support your classmate's perspective?
  • Yes, but... You can partially agree with your classmate, and you can also point out areas that you disagree with or differ from your classmate's post. Are there any counterarguments you can demonstrate? Do you agree with your classmate's overall opinion, but did you identify flaws in their argument?
  • No, because... You can disagree with your classmates; however, make sure to be respectful and back up your claims. You can thank your classmate for expressing their side. You can also ask your classmate clarifying questions. Make sure to avoid personal attacks or harsh language when replying to your classmate. Focus on civil disagreement. Why do you disagree? Can you point out areas to improve in your classmate's argument? Were there any logical errors or fallacies?
