URE- Undergraduate Research Experience LibGuide

Welcome to the URE experience!

Inspire Future Scholars.

Faculty Mentors and the Undergraduate Research Experience (URE)

As a URE faculty mentor, you’ll guide a high-achieving student through an eight-week research project in your area of expertise. Your mentee may come to the program with their own research proposal, or they may join you in contributing to ongoing research that you’re already conducting.

Why Participate?

  • Build meaningful faculty-student connections that support academic growth.
  • Inspire enthusiasm for research and your discipline.
  • Receive a stipend for your mentorship.

What to Expect

A URE runs for at least eight weeks. During this time:

  • You’ll meet with your student(s) at least once a week to discuss their progress and offer guidance.
  • Students will submit a weekly log summarizing their research activities and outcomes.

Interested in mentoring a student? Join our faculty mentor pool by completing the online form.

Our team will do our best to match you with a student whose research interests align with your expertise. Please note that while we strive to make strong matches, we cannot guarantee a placement each semester.

What motivated me to take part was the desire to create more out-of-class experiences for our  students. Through research writing, as well as discussions with a faculty member, students can enhance their writing and critical thinking skills. Also, these are great experiences for students who are interested in the social sciences. It gives them an opportunity to review whether social science analysis and research is something that they would be interested in for their future careers, etc.

URE experiences give faculty members the opportunity to give back. Given that many faculty mentors helped us attain the positions that we have, these URE mentor experiences give us an opportunity to return the favor to our next generation of students. As we are a community college, we often don't get the opportunity to work closely with students on projects, especially more advanced ones. The URE experience gives us the opportunity to both mentor and plant the social science career seed within URE participants.
