CRLA Level 2 Advanced Tutor Training Certification Completion

You may be familiar with that old Porgy & Bess song "Summertime" by George Gershwin, with the opening line, "Summertime, and the livin' is easy!"

Well, this summer wasn't just easy living for the twelve participants in our CRLA Level 2 Advanced Tutor Training Certification program. In fact, I heard one participant joke that he had fewer citations in his master's thesis.

Seriously, however, I couldn't be prouder of these twelve members of our Learning Resources team, who decided to take their knowledge and skills to the next level. Together, through a number of group presentations, reflections, and write-ups, they tackled thorny topics on the metacognitive and psychosocial requirements of providing effective learning assistance:

  • Working through challenging student situations
  • Implementing motivational techniques
  • Working with faculty and staff
  • Giving constructive feedback
  • Assessing student needs
  • Advancing critical thinking skills
  • Assessing and changing student behaviors
  • Promoting universal design for learning
  • Understanding neurodiversity

The best part is: the many group presentations are being recorded to share with all of the Learning Resources team, so that everyone can learn from them in the future.

As a final project, all participants were required to give a pitch for an idea that they would like to see implemented within the department or the College (this was my favorite part). Some donned costumes; others had props and engaging designs. It was great fun to listen to so many creative ideas, partake in a smorgasbord of culinary delights, and enjoy each other's company.

Many, many thanks to Ethan Hart and Courtney Myhre for their work in creating this wonderful learning experience for the team members listed below, and equally, I extend my gratitude to these team members for their desire to engage, excel, and envision in and for the future of our department and ultimately toward student achievement.

We hope to host CRLA Level 2 training, again, in summer 2024 for a new cohort to advance to the next level!
