Discussion Prompts

Potential Discussion Prompts (courtesy of Dr. Michael Culligan)

1. Can you identify a time in history/science etc where collective blindness (term explained in class) led to consequential negative results? (Chapter 1).

2. Explain Mt. Everest Story: Was there ever a time in which you were part of a team and felt uncomfortable expressing your opinion? What were the variables that lead to your being silent? Was there a dominance dynamic? What was the information you withheld? Would your opinion/information have helped the team accomplish its goal?  (Chapter 3)

3. Have students, individually, try and complete the crossword puzzle on page 74-75 (give them 12 minutes). Once the 12 minutes are up, explain the crossword puzzle's history about being used to recruit codebreakers to defeat the Nazis' Enigma machine. Then, separate the class into groups of 8 and see if they can work together to finish the crossword puzzle. The instructor can explain the benefit of having different perspectives and clones vs. rebels. (Chapter 2).
