Issues

Often a murder or heinous crime gives birth to action as people come to terms with tragedy or others' responses to it. No different, the murder of Matthew Shepard led to new legislation, examination of personal and community values, reflection on tolerance and intolerance, educational campaigns and a media frenzy. The articles on this page represent studies and viewpoints spawned by this violent crime or similar acts. Having read about the murder and seen/read The Laramie Project, what are your reactions to the articles and the points they make? Do you agree or disagree with the findings? Why?  Did you find the article failed to consider a relevant argument or viewpoint? Locate information that might address the gaps you noted.   In what ways does this new information change the conversation on the given topic or your perceptions of it?

The Community

What is the difference between tolerance and acceptance? Was Laramie a town of tolerance or acceptance? How do we know? Think about your community? Is it tolerant or accepting? How do you know?

Media
