Persuasion & Multiple Views

Most college writing is persuasive in nature, and as part of the rules of persuasion (sometimes called argumentation), writers need to be aware of the multiple views related to topics.  While the key to persuasion is to have one central idea (i.e., thesis), good writers  still address and refute arguments that persuade in a direction opposite of the central idea (i.e., counter-argument, rebuttal).

In the database, Opposing Viewpoints*,  writers can find news and information showing the depth of the topic at hand, choose the content to help them create their thesis, and see the alternative views that will help them better argue their case.

To the right are hundreds of topics, students can find in the Opposing Viewpoints database, simply by clicking on the Issues tab.  With each issue, Opposing Viewpoints provides news, journals, reference material, primary sources, and websites containing a broad range of information on their issue -- all in one place.
