Industry Codes

NAICS: The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.

SIC: Standard Industrial Classification codes classify a business or facility according to its primary kind of activity, such as chemical manufacturing or electricity generation.

Finding the Codes:

Researching the Industry:

  • Find the NAICS or SIC code for your industry and read an industry report.
    Go to Gale OneFile Entrepreneurship, login (student # and the pin is the two digits of your birth month and the last two digits of your birth year. Ex.: March, 1998 is 0298, a total of 4 digits.)
  • Go to Business Source Complete (EBSCO) and search by NAICS code from the drop down menu. Once you have your results list go to the left hand column and click on the arrow next to NAICS/Industry and check the category that most closely matches your query. Click update.
